Parkersburg Using Fund Program to Take Down Dangerous Buildings

Our citizens are among the brightest, hardest working and most dedicated people you’ll find.

 

Sadly, too many of our cities and towns are littered with blighted, dangerous buildings. These structures not only hinder growth – they weaken neighborhoods and bring down property values. To help make our state shine, the Fund and a bipartisan group of dedicated legislators, developed the West Virginia Property Rescue Initiative. This program provides cities and counties with resources to acquire and remove dilapidated properties from their communities.

 

We are proud of WVPRI and we have worked with stakeholders from across the state to promote this program and make certain that our elected leaders at every level know they can utilize this resource.

 

We would like to take a moment and highlight the progress the city of Parkersburg has made as they begin the process of taking down blighted properties. According to a recent article in The Parkersburg News and Sentinel, 30 problem structures have been razed this year. Most were taken down using WVPRI funding, while 13 demolitions were done by property owners.

 

“We’re glad to see that Parkersburg is using the West Virginia Property Rescue Initiative,” said Erica Boggess, the Fund’s Acting Executive Director. “City leaders have worked with determination and dedication through what can be a demanding process. It’s clear their efforts are making a difference.”   

 

We invite you to read the article in the link below, but there is one quote we’d like to point out. Parkersburg Police Chief Joe Martin said that tearing down these buildings is making the city safer.

 

“It does affect us, not having to respond to problem houses,” Martin told the paper. “The owners give up on the property, and it just becomes an eyesore, a magnet for vandalism.”

 

We think that’s something special and we’re glad our program is helping to make a community safer.
